Question:
- What is your opinion about fasting the six days of Shawaal for the one that has to make up days from Ramadan?
Answer:
- The answer to that is the statement of the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) “who ever fasted Ramadan, then follows it up with six days of Shawaal, it is like they fasted the whole year” (narrated by al Bukhari and Muslim). If there was for an individual to make up a day or days, and he wanted to fast the six days, then does he fast it before Ramadan or after it?
- And example of this is the man that fasted twenty four days of Ramadan, and had to make up six days. If he fasted the six from Shawaal before he fasted the six make up days, then it is not said that he fasted Ramadan then followed up with the six days of Shawaal. This is because it is not said that he fasted all of Ramadan unless he completed it. Because of this we see that the reward for fasting the six days of Shawaal is not confirmed for the one that fasted them and still had days to make up from Ramadan.
- This issue is not from the differing of the Scholars about the permissibly of doing non obligatory fasts for the one that has to make up days. This is because the non-obligatory fasts that is differed about is talking about those that are not from those six days. As far as those from the six days then they are to follow the days of Ramadan. It is not possible that the reward can be confirmed for the one that has not completed Ramadan.

I was taught this early on that any missed days of Ramadan had to be made up before the 6 days of Shawaal.
