In this post I would like to remind you all of something that we all need to discuss with our families, as it is also very important. This is the fact that the day of fasting is not simply about being hungry and thirsty. It is not about trying to wait until we can break our fasts. It is not about sleeping all day and remaining awake all night doing whatever we want, just because we are not fasting. This month is not about any of these things.
The month of ramadan is about training our bodies and souls to get used to not having everything that it wants and desires, when ever they want and desire them. It is about doing something long enough that it should become habit, and part of who we are on a normal basis. It is definitely not about waiting until the month is over, so that we can get back to life as normal either. It is about changing our ways, so that this new and better lifestyle becomes our norm.
It is almost as though many of us have forgotten what this month of fasting is all about. We spend so much time waiting for the day to be over or the month to be over, that we fail to truly benefit from the amazing opportunity that is in front of us. We have to change the way that we see this month. We have to begin discussing these things with the Muslims around us, so that we can help them change the way that they see this month and what it really is about.
This month is definitely not about changing the way we live our lives only from sun up to sun down. It is also not about changing our lifestyles from the beginning of the month to the end of the month. Rather it is about changing the way that we live the rest of our lives, and training ourselves to do it in a way that is both productive and pleasing to Allah. After all, this should be all of our goals as Muslims anyway. Why not take advantage of this month to get ourselves back on track?
