As far as the obligation of the fast, then it was originally made an obligation on the Muslims during the second year of hijra during the month of Sha’baan. This means that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) fasted the month 9 times. All of those times were reported to be short (meaning 29 days) and only one of them was reported to have been completed (meaning 30 days).
