We welcome you to our new blog post topic about Ramadan. We want to discuss certain things that all of us should know going into everyday of the fasts. These are things that are not only important to you, but to the whole of the Muslim Ummah, so be sure to share these messages, and re-post the information everywhere possible, so as to take part in the reward of teaching the Muslims those things they need to know.
Therefore we will start with the meaning of the word “Sawm”. It means linguistically to abstain from something. Like in the verse where Allah tells us about in the story of Mariam {Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.} [19:26].
Islamically, the word means to abstain from all types of things that break one’s fast from sunrise to sunset, with a specific intention.
