As well we must realize that the Scholars that remained upon the way of the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) also saw good character as important. As a matter of fact, it was much more important to them than most people of our time. This is something that is easily seen when we look around in our societies today. It is almost as though good character is an option that is passed over as a norm, except when it comes to our loved ones. Even then, we find that many times the issue of good character is not practiced in many cases.
The scholars of the past and present saw the issue of good character as that which will aid people in their religion and in being more religious. Look at the statement of Muhammad bin Sireen (may Allah have mercy on him) when he said, “They used to consider good character as something that aids in the religion.” As well, Abdul Rahmaan bin Mahdi (may Allah have mercy on him) was reported as saying, “A man should fear the worst of mannerisms and character the same way that he fears haram (impermissible) actions.”
Do you see how important it was to the Salaf of this Ummah? Why do we not hold it in the same esteem?
