“Another issue that our communities are being affected by in terms of the parent – child relationship, is what it means to be a parent. When we look around in our society, we find that many adults have a hard time differentiating between being a parent to our child and being a friend. We even find that many people choose to be a friend, when they should be putting their role as a parent first. A parent gives direction, support, and raises the next generation to pick up where we leave off. The friend will many times put one’s feelings before their well being, so as not to make waves. Our children throughout their lives will have many many friends, in sha Allah. But they only have one set of parents. They are in more need of their parents to play the parental role, and let the friends be their buddies, then everyone aiming to be a friend and letting them raise themselves.”
