Using Kuhl While Fasting

Bismillah

Question:

  • What is the ruling of using Kuhl while fasting?

Answer:

  • There is no problem for the fasting person to use kuhl, eye drops or even ear drops even if the persons tastes it in his throat. His fast is not broken by this. We know this because he has not eaten or drank anything, nor done that which carries the same meaning as eating or drinking. The proof only talks about eating and drinking, therefore we don’t add to it anything that does not carry the same meaning. The opinion which we have mentioned here is also that which was chosen by Sheikh al Islam Ibn Taymeeyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) and it is the correct opinion. But if the individual puts in nose drops and it reaches his insides (stomach) then he has broken his fast if that was his intention. This is because of the statement of the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), “When rinsing your nose then make the water go all the way up except in the situation when you are fasting” (narrated by Abi Dawood, Timradhi, an Nisaa’i and Ibn Maajah).
